PowerPoint: reboot your slide with Reset

Have you ever formatted a PowerPoint presentation slide with the best of formatting intentions only to find it just didn’t look right?  How do you fix it?

Like Word and Excel, if there are only a few formatting wrongs to make right, you could use Undo (Ctrl+Z).  However, with PowerPoint, there’s a little function which I think is quite snazzy.  It’s called Reset Slide.

As the name implies, this function allows you to reset your slide to its default settings with the click of a button.  So, whether you’ve changed the size and position of your slide placeholders, or applied some crazy, over-the-top formatting to your heading style, there is a quick fix.  Here’s how:

  • Right click the offending slide (let’s blame the slide);
  • Select Reset Slide.

Likewise, have you ever added a background to your slide that you thought, Wow, that’ll look nice?, only to find that no, it really doesn’t?!?!  If so, you’re not alone – we’ve all been there.  Unfortunately though Reset Slide won’t reset your background; instead use Reset Background.  Here’s how:

  • Right click the background of your slide;
  • Select Format Background;
  • Click the Reset Background button, followed by Close.

Something to remember: if you were a little hasty and applied the same background to all slides within your presentation, you won’t be able to undo this using Reset Background.  You’ll need to format your background via Format Background – right click the slide for this option; then click the Apply to All button.  Needless to say, it will be a lesson well learnt.
